Medical Oncology
We use medical oncology – chemotherapy -- to destroy your growing cancer cells with repeated treatments of aggressive medication. For some forms of cancer, more than one medication may be used in your treatment. This allows the growing cell to be attacked at more than one stage of growth and improves the odds of eliminating the cancer.
We administer chemotherapy in cycles, giving your body “rest periods” between treatments. After a treatment time is set aside for your body to build healthy cells before the next treatment. This cycle continues until your cancer has been eliminated or put into remission.
Chemotherapy aims to reduce the number of cancer cells. As a result, it may:
- Cure your cancer
- Cause remission (no active symptoms of disease)
- Kill any cancer cells remaining after surgery
- Control your cancer for a period of time
- Reduce your symptoms (such as pain)
